TL;DR. The best stocking stuffers for women are small things she'll use within the week, chosen for an ordinary day of hers and not for the season. Below are 24 ideas sorted by her morning (tea, hand cream, a small notebook), her evening (socks, a beeswax candle, something quiet to do with her hands), and who she is to you: your mom, a friend, a coworker, a mother-in-law. Most can be found for under $30 and several cost nothing. There's also a simple formula for filling a stocking, and a short list of what to leave out.
A stocking is the one gift nobody plans. The main present gets weeks of thought. The stocking gets a quick lap of the shop on the 22nd, and that is how grown women end up with a snowman lip balm, a mini bottle of something sticky, and socks with a joke on them.
I've come to think the stocking deserves better, because it's usually the first thing opened. In our house it's opened in dressing gowns, with coffee, before anyone is properly awake. What's inside sets the tone for the morning.
So I fill a stocking the way I'd choose any gift for a woman I care about: I picture one ordinary day of hers. What does she reach for at seven in the morning? What does she do at nine at night when the house is quiet? The answers are the list. I've described the ideas as types of object and not as brands, so you can find them wherever you already shop. In the UK you'd call these stocking fillers, and everything here applies.
Stocking stuffers for her morning
Morning things are the safest stocking stuffer ideas for her, because every morning happens. A small improvement to it gets used three hundred times a year.
- A small tin of loose-leaf tea, or a bag of good coffee. Pick one kind and buy the better version of it. A single tin of a breakfast tea she already likes is more useful than a sampler of twelve flavors she has to work through. If she's a coffee drinker, a small bag from a local roaster, with the roast date on it, is a real treat.
- A tea infuser or a long-handled spoon. A basket infuser that sits in the mug is easier to clean than the ball-on-a-chain type. A long spoon for a tall mug or a jar of honey costs very little and ends up in daily use.
- A hand cream she wouldn't buy herself. A small tube, lightly scented or unscented, that sinks in quickly. Most women I know have a serviceable one by the sink and would never spend more on a nicer one. This is exactly what a stocking is for.
- A lip balm with no flavor and no glitter. A plain, good balm in a tin or a stick. It's a tiny thing, and she'll carry it in a coat pocket all winter.
- A pocket notebook and a pencil. A slim notebook that fits a handbag, with paper thick enough that ink doesn't show through. For shopping lists, the name of the book someone recommended, the thing she must remember to tell her sister.
- Seeds or bulbs for spring. For the gardener, a packet of sweet peas or a few paperwhite bulbs is a promise of something in March. They weigh nothing and fill the toe of the stocking nicely.
Stocking stuffers for her evening

The evening is where I'd put most of the budget. By nine at night a woman has usually spent the day deciding things for other people, and the best small gifts for women at that hour ask nothing of her.
- Proper wool socks. One pair of soft merino or wool-blend socks in a plain color. Skip the slogans. Warm feet are the simplest comfort there is, and a good pair lasts for years.
- A small beeswax or unscented candle. Small on purpose, so that she burns it and doesn't save it. Beeswax has a faint honey smell of its own, which suits people who find perfumed candles too much. Add a box of long matches.
- A set of brush pens, with the book waiting beside the stocking. This is the one we make, so weigh my view accordingly. I should be honest about size first: our One Color Coloring Book is a full-size spiral book and it won't fit inside a stocking. What does fit is the set of 3 dual-tip brush pens, with a brush tip for filling large shapes and a fine tip for edges. So I put the pens in the stocking and wrap the book to sit underneath it. The book has 65 bold designs with small marked zones showing what to fill, and you fill them with one color, so there's no palette to choose. The paper is thick 160gsm and the metal spiral lets it lie flat on a table or a lap tray. I'd choose it for the woman who says she'd like to do something in the evening other than look at a screen. One relevant study: in a randomized controlled trial of 120 adults aged 55 to 75, a single 20-minute session of mandala coloring lowered anxiety more than 20 minutes of reading. That was one session with mandala patterns, so I wouldn't stretch it far. It does suggest that structured coloring is a calm way to spend twenty minutes.
- Rolled coloring pages, tied with a ribbon. This one is free. Print two or three of our free printable Christmas coloring pages, roll them, and tie them with a ribbon or kitchen twine. Tucked in the top of a stocking with a pen, they look charming and give her something to do on Christmas afternoon.
- A book light or a good bookmark. A small clip-on light with a warm setting lets her read in bed without the overhead lamp. If she already has one, a leather or woven bookmark is a quiet pleasure for a reader.
- A deck of cards or a small puzzle book. A nice deck with a linen finish, or a slim book of crosswords with a pencil. Both are for the hour after dinner, and a deck of cards tends to come out again at New Year.
If the woman you're buying for has a mind that won't switch off at night, I've made a narrower list of stocking stuffers for overthinkers with that in mind.
Stocking stuffers for mom, and for the other women on your list
The same object can be right for one woman and wrong for another. Here is how I'd adjust by who she is to you.
Stocking stuffers for mom
Mothers are usually the ones who fill everyone else's stocking, and in plenty of homes hers is the thinnest. The principle for stocking stuffers for mom is simple: things she buys for others and never for herself.
- The good chocolate. One bar or a small box of the kind she'd call too expensive, in the flavor she actually likes. If she loves plain dark chocolate, don't buy the assortment.
- A small framed photo. A recent picture of the family or the grandchildren, printed and put in a frame small enough for a bedside table. It takes ten minutes to arrange and it will stay on display for years.
- A handwritten note or a voucher for your time. "One Sunday lunch, cooked by me, you sit down." Write it on a card and tuck it at the very top. It costs nothing and it is often the item she keeps.
- A fresh version of something worn out. Notice what's tired: the gardening gloves with a hole, the tape measure that no longer retracts, the reading glasses case held shut with a rubber band. Replacing it shows you've been paying attention.
For an older mother or a grandmother, comfort for the hands and eyes matters more, and my guide to gifts for grandma goes into that in detail.
For a friend or a sister
- Something from where you live. A jar of local honey, a small pot of jam from the farm shop, a bar of soap from a maker in your town. It's personal without being intimate, and it travels well in a parcel.
- A paperback you've read and loved. A slim one. Write a line inside the cover about why you thought of her. A book you can vouch for is worth more than this year's bestseller.
- A pretty tin of mints or pastilles for her handbag. Small, useful, and gone by February.
For a coworker or a neighbor
Stocking stuffers for adults you know less well should be neutral and consumable. Nothing scented for the body, nothing with a size.
- A small tin of tea or a bag of coffee, as in the morning list. Add a handwritten tag.
- A plain, good pen. One that writes smoothly and feels nice in the hand. Everybody uses a pen, and hardly anybody buys themselves a good one.
- A bar of chocolate with the ingredients clearly listed, so she can check it against any allergy or diet.
For a mother-in-law or someone you're still getting to know
- A small plant or a bulb in a pot. An amaryllis bulb or a little potted herb is cheerful and carries no hidden message.
- A set of plain notecards with stamps. Useful, tasteful, and easy to receive. If you'd like more ideas on this neutral ground, my list of cozy gifts for women is full of them.
What goes beside the stocking, not in it

Some of the nicest pairings are a small thing in the stocking and a larger one waiting under it. A tin of tea in the stocking and a teapot beneath. A bookmark in the stocking and the novel wrapped beside it. Seeds in the stocking and a pair of secateurs under the tree. She opens the small item first, wonders about it for a moment, and then the second parcel answers the question.
The pens and the coloring book work the same way. The pens go in the stocking. The one color coloring book is wrapped flat and placed underneath, because a spiral-bound book that size would bend if you pushed it in. If she is devoted to a pet, the Cats and Dogs Special Editions follow the same one-color idea with animal illustrations, and the two covers are shown above.
I like this pairing for a particular kind of woman: the one who looks after everybody and would say she "isn't artistic." There is one color and the zones are marked, so there's nothing to get wrong. If that doesn't sound like her, choose a different pair from the paragraph above. The principle matters more than the product.
How to fill a stocking, and what to leave out
Here is the formula I use when I'm standing in a shop with no ideas. It works for any budget.
- Something to use up. Tea, chocolate, hand cream, a candle.
- Something to keep. Socks, a pen, a notebook, a small frame.
- Something to do. Cards, a puzzle book, pens and pages, seeds to plant.
- Something only you would give her. The note, the photo, the replacement for the worn-out thing.
Four or five items are plenty. If your budget is gifts under $30 for the whole stocking, that still covers one item from each line, since the fourth line is usually free. I'd spend most of it on one thing of real quality and let the rest be modest.
Fewer items is also kinder. Cleveland Clinic describes decision fatigue as the state of being mentally and emotionally worn down after making many decisions through the day, and by Christmas morning most women have made a month's worth. A stocking with five things she can use straight away is a rest. A stocking with fifteen bits and pieces is something to sort.
What I'd leave out
- Anything that reads as a comment. Anti-aging creams, diet teas, books about getting organized. However kindly meant, they land badly.
- Anything that is really housework. Dishcloths, scrubbing brushes and cleaning gadgets belong in the cupboard, not the stocking.
- Strong perfume or heavily scented products, unless you know the exact one she wears.
- Novelty items. Slogan socks, joke mugs, the miniature desk game. Funny for a minute, then clutter.
- Tiny sizes of things she doesn't use. A travel set of five lotions is five things to store.
- Gift cards with no note. If you give one, choose a shop she loves and write why.
How to pack it
Put the heaviest item in the toe so the stocking hangs well. An old custom is a tangerine or a clementine at the very bottom, and I still do it, because it fills the awkward space and smells like Christmas. Then work upward from the sturdy things to the delicate ones, and finish with whatever should be seen first: the rolled pages, the note, a candy cane.
You don't need to wrap everything. I wrap two or three items in tissue paper, since unwrapping is part of the pleasure, and leave the rest loose. Take price stickers off, remove any stiff plastic packaging, and put a handwritten tag on the stocking itself.
If you're choosing only three things
Choose one for her morning, one for her evening, and one that only you could have given her. Tea, wool socks, and a note in your own handwriting would do very well. Everything else on this list is a variation on those three.

The One Color Coloring Book
65+ bold designs, one single color, zero decisions — on 160 gsm paper with a lay-flat spiral, engineered for the wind-down ritual described above.
