Why monochrome coloring calms an anxious mind
Most adult coloring pages ask a lot of you: which color goes where, which pen, which shade to blend. For an anxious or overthinking mind, that is just more decisions at the end of an already full day. Monochrome coloring removes all of it. Every page is one bold black shape, and you fill it with a single color. There is nothing to choose and nothing to get wrong, so your attention has one quiet, single-channel task to land on instead of racing.
That is exactly why these free printable coloring pages work so well for stress and anxiety. The simplicity is the whole point. If you want the full story behind it, our guide to what monochrome coloring is breaks it down, and we go deeper on the calming side in coloring books for anxiety, and if your evenings feel like too much noise rather than too many tasks, our guide to overstimulated vs overwhelmed explains which reset actually works.
Bold and easy coloring pages, made for adults
If you have been searching for bold and easy coloring pages, this pack is exactly that: large, simple shapes with thick outlines — no tiny details, no crowded patterns. Big spaces are faster to fill, easier on the eyes and far more relaxing than intricate designs, which makes these pages a natural fit for beginners, for seniors, and for anyone whose last coloring book felt like work.
Every page is hand-drawn in the same one-color style as our book: you pick one pen, fill the marked shapes, and a finished page appears in a single quiet evening. No skill needed, nothing to plan.
Free printable coloring pages for adults, made simple
These are coloring pages for adults, not busy children's sheets and not intricate mandalas that overwhelm before they relax. Each free printable page is a bold, easy design built around one color, which makes them perfect if detailed coloring books have ever stressed you out more than they helped. We explain why bold beats busy in our piece on bold and easy coloring pages.
How to use your free monochrome pages
Once your six free pages land in your inbox, print them on any home printer, standard paper is fine. Grab any pen, pencil or marker you already own (any of the best pens for adult coloring books will do), pick one color, and fill the shapes. Ten quiet minutes in the evening is all it takes to switch off. If the printable format clicks for you, the full one color coloring books take the same idea further: 65+ designs on thick 160gsm paper that home printing can't match. When you are ready for the full ritual, the One Color Coloring Book gives you 65+ designs on premium 160gsm paper, no printing required.
How one color coloring pages work
Look closely at any page in the pack and you will see a small mark inside some of the shapes. Those are the shapes you fill. Everything without a mark stays white. That is the whole method: choose one pen, color every marked shape, and the picture builds itself as the solid color meets the white of the paper. Black gives the strongest contrast, but any single shade you love works.
It looks a little like a color by number, and plenty of people arrive here searching for a monochrome color by number printable. The difference is the missing key. A color by number has you look up each number, find the matching pencil and swap colors dozens of times. A one color page asks a single question, marked or not, and the answer is printed right there in the shape.
Two pages from the Cats Special Edition of the book, each shown half empty and half filled.
How to print your coloring pages
The pack arrives as a PDF, so it prints from a phone, a tablet or a computer. A few settings decide whether the page comes out crisp or cropped.
| Setting | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Paper size | US Letter (8.5 x 11 in) or A4. The pages are drawn a little narrower than both, so they sit comfortably on either. |
| Scale | "Fit to page", sometimes called "Scale to fit". It keeps the whole design inside your printer's margins. |
| Color | Black and white. The designs are pure black line art, so no color ink is used. |
| Quality | Normal or Standard. Draft mode can leave the outlines grey and broken. |
| Sides | Single-sided. Marker ink can show through to the back of thin paper. |
The best paper for printing coloring pages
Standard copy paper (80gsm, roughly 20 lb in the US) is fine for colored pencils, gel pens and fineliners. It is thin, though: a juicy marker or brush pen will ghost through to the back and can feather at the edge of a shape.
If you plan to use markers, move up to a heavier sheet. 120gsm (32 lb) is a clear step up, and 160gsm light cardstock is the weight the printed book uses. Check your printer's maximum paper weight before loading cardstock, and slip a scrap sheet under the page while you color. Our guide to coloring books with thick paper explains what those gsm numbers mean in practice.
One tip for inkjet printers: give the page a few minutes to dry before you start. Inkjet black is often water-based, and a wet marker dragged across fresh outlines can smear them. Laser prints hold up to water-based pens without that problem.
Which pen to use (you only need one)
Anything you already own will do: a felt tip, a gel pen, a soft pencil. If you want the method at its best, use a dual tip brush pen. The brush end covers the big shapes in a few strokes and the fine end reaches into corners and thin letters. We compare the options in our guide to the best markers and brush pens for adult coloring. Our own dual tip brush pens are made for exactly this; on a home-printed page, pair them with the heavier paper described above.
Dual tip brush pens on the printed book: brush end for big shapes, fine end for corners.
Which page to start with
- Ten minutes to spare: the "You Held It Together Again" lettering page. Big letters and a scalloped border, with the fewest small shapes in the pack.
- If you have a cat (or wish you did): the cat watching the goldfish bowl. If that is the page you reach for first, the Cats Special Edition is 50 designs in the same spirit, and there is a Dogs Special Edition too. Our guide to choosing a cat coloring book for adults covers what to look for.
- A longer, quieter evening: the cozy table or the café laptop scene. More shapes, more small corners, and a bigger reveal at the end.
Looking for a monochrome coloring book PDF?
This pack is it: six pages in the same hand-drawn style as the book, free, in one PDF. The full book is not sold as a download. It is printed only, because the paper is half of the experience: a brush pen behaves very differently on 160gsm stock than on a sheet of copy paper.
| Free printable pack | The printed book | |
|---|---|---|
| Designs | 6 | 65+ (50 in the Cats and Dogs editions) |
| Paper | Whatever is in your printer | 160gsm, no bleed-through |
| Format | Loose sheets, PDF | Lie-flat metal spiral |
| Best for | Trying the method tonight | Making it a habit |
